From Real Cities to Virtual Habitats (2002)

Abstract
This paper outlines the workflow from terrestrial and aerial images of urban areas to the reconstructed virtual models and the corresponding visualization. We combine new ideas as well as known methods from computer vision and computer graphics to accomplish this challenging task. The reconstruction and modeling steps within our workflow aim at the automatic content creation for virtual environments. The result of these steps is a virtual copy of an existing urban habitat. This set of data is further processed to obtain a scene database suitable for realtime visualization. One major component of the scene database is the LOD-tree, which allows efficient culling techniques to be applied and provides hierarchical levels of detail.
